Lake Nicaragua, or Cocibolca as it’s otherwise known, is not only Nicaragua’s largest lake, but it is also the largest in all of Central America. It’s comprised of freshwater, and was formed through tectonic activity, from the movement and growth of all the nearby volcanoes.
Only a quick trip from Managua, Las Isletas are a popular tourist destination of many small islands, just off the coast of the colonial city of Granada. It is within these Isletas that the Ecolodge of Isleta El Espino exists, in the shadow of volcano.
With only five guest rooms, Isleta El Espino exudes like an exclusive Island experience (aah, sweet alliteration), channeling a boho vibe, with a modern Nicaraguan twist.
Common Area
We spent most of our time in the “common area”, which is really just a large outdoor patio, alongside the pool and yoga deck. We had beers under the mango trees, and amazing dinner & breakfast spreads on the massive beautiful live edge table tops, that were full of unique holes and divots. I seriously wanted to take one home.
Yoga Deck
The yoga deck made for the best views of the volcano, with a few chairs to sit on the edge, over the water, and take it in the sunset. It’s the most relaxing spot on the Island.
Swimming Pool
The pool was the main draw that made me want to visit Isleta Espino, as I’ve probably never seen a more scenic swimming location in the world. We spent a lot of time with our feet in the water, gazing at the view, but I’ll just let the photos speak for themselves.
The Casita
The room featured a mosquito net over the bed, screened windows, ceiling fan, closet safe, and private bathroom with hot water shower.
My favourite part was the wide french opening doors that gave way to our private porch, overlooking nearby Islets, the impressive Mombacho Volcano, and the Lake itself. Throw in a hammock, and I never wanted to leave.
I also booked a massage, which was setup in an outdoor tent area behind out casita, which was very relaxing, to the sound of the nature around me.
The Treehouse
The Treetop Rancho rooms are elevated into the canopy of mango grove and overlook the pool and lake.
We didn’t personally sleep in the treehouse, but I couldn’t help but marvel at it every time I walked by, or sat in the common area. Guests can book one of two rooms for their own night in a tree, or anyone visiting the island can simply hangout below it in a little lounge area, complete with couches and a hammock.
Food & Drinks
The kitchen and bar is open throughout the day preparing fresh snacks, lunch, smoothies, cocktails, and dinner. Daily breakfast is included with your stay. and features fresh & home made dishes, both sweet & savoury, cold & hot, and always with fresh fruit, juice, and coffee.
Wade said that his meal of Pollo a la Plancha (chicken breast filet with sweet chili, jalapeño-onion & chimichurri sauce with sautéed seasonal vegetables and puréed taro root) was the best thing he ate in Nicaragua, and I really loved my breakfast of avocado toast.
Overall Experience
Isleta Espino was a different experience than any of the others that we had in Nicaragua–and we had even spent time at another hotel in the Islets–but it was about the overall vibe. It’s a combination of the modest eco dwellings, the casual outdoor living, and the fun boho decor that just set a mood for your stay.
I would happily go back to spend more time at this cute little Islet hotel–especially in the hammocks.

TIP: You can book a tour of the area here, which will also provide your transportation to the Isletas, as well as a fun way to explore before or after the hotel.
