Sports are a pretty big deal in Seattle. Other than an NBA franchise, all major leagues have a team based in the biggest city in Washington State.
That means there are some amazing sports venues that you can go visit in Seattle. Let’s take a look at the best sporting theatres here.
Lumen Field
By far the busiest venue for sports in Seattle is Lumen Field, formerly CenturyLink Field, on Occidental Avenue South. This is home to the Seattle Seahawks of the NFL and the XFL’s Seattle Dragons, who are part-owned by ex-pro wrestler and leading Hollywood actor Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.
The Seahawks won the NFL Championship in 2013 when they demolished Denver Broncos 43-8 at Super Bowl XLVIII. They also retained their NFC Championship the following year but lost to New England Patriots at Super Bowl XLIX when trying to mount a defence of the title. Lumen Field, which can hold over 68,000 fans, is also home to Major League Soccer franchise Seattle Sounders. They have been one of the most successful teams in recent times.
The Sounders have won two MLS Cups and reached four finals since 2016 after first topping the regular-season standings in 2014. Seattle native Brian Schmetzer is their current head coach.
Emerald Downs
As Seattle is known as The Emerald City, the horse racetrack Emerald Downs in the Auburn suburb of the metropolitan area plays on that nickname. This is home to the only graded race for thoroughbreds in Washington State, the Longacres Mile Handicap.
Race meets at Emerald Downs happen on weekends including Friday evenings from April through September if you’re planning to visit. Check out the novelty T. Rex Race too. As well as thoroughbred action on dirt, this track also offers American quarter horse races over even shorter distances. Parimutuel betting on the horses is allowed in Washington State both on track at Emerald Downs and online through racebooks or mobile apps like TVG, which according to WSN.com cover all tracks across America. You can wager on a horse to win, place or show, or try out Exotic bets like Exactas and Trifectas.
T-Mobile Park
On First Avenue South, you’ll find Seattle’s ballpark. Complete with a retractable roof, T-Mobile Park is the home of MLB franchise Seattle Mariners. Formerly Safeco Field, it’s in the SoDo neighbourhood of the city close to where Interstate 90 terminates. Since the Mariners moved into T-Mobile Park, they’ve reached post-season a couple of times. Consecutive successes in the American League Division Series in 2000 and 2001 saw them fall short in the American League Championship Series to the New York Yankees.
The all-time attendance record for T-Mobile Park was set in 2003, but not by a baseball game. Instead, WWE held WrestleMania XIX in the stadium drawing a crowd of 54,097 who came to see the last match ever wrestled by “Stone Cold” Steve Austin against The Rock.
Ken Griffey Jr. is probably the most famous player to represent the Mariners. The centre fielder was a 13-time MLB All-Star, earning 10 appearances in the Midsummer Classic while he represented them. Seattle has plenty of superb sports venues that are well worth visiting.
